On the south banks of the River Clyde, Greenock, Inverclyde, Renfrewshire, has a rich and colourful history!

The town is approximately twenty five miles outside of Glasgow. It has forged an international reputation as a hub of ship building as well as an important embarkation point during the Second World War.  The remainders of Greenock’s glorious past can still be found all over the town, but it is an area of continuous regeneration, including the new Greenock Waterfront, taking in Custom House Quay, to the town centre and surrounding areas.

With a rise in spacious villas built in the West End part of town – this is one of the most popular areas of Greenock to choose to buy a house. Many old houses were formerly the homes of local businessmen and affluent ship owners. Here you could walk down the Esplanade, by the water’s edge. It stretches out for a mile, looking out to Kilcreggan across the Clyde.

The Greenock Esplanade, a favourite summer destination for the people of Greenock,  is also the site of the Old West Kirk. The church has stood in that spot since 1926. However it was originally located at Container Way.  The Kirk was first constructed in 1591, and is known for its stunning stained glass windows.

One of Greenock’s most important landmarks is the Municipal Buildings, with its imposing Victoria Tower. It has been in existence since 1886 and is 245 feet (75 m) tall. It is higher than the City Chambers in Glasgow.

Greenock is also home to the beautiful Battery Park. This popular playing field is situated close to Fort Matilda. It is used for sports and public events and is the perfect spot take a walk around and enjoy the sunshine.

Fort Matilda, moreover, is an attractive suburb at the far west end of Greenock. It has its own train stop, which is first on the line from Gourock to Glasgow. This part of town has various interesting features, going back to the 19th Century. It extends to the Second World War, where the RNR Barracks were located south of Battery Park.

Greenock’s long association with shipping and boating continues with its close proximity to Inverkip. It houses the famous Kip Marina, considered one of the best in the country.
